There is a particular kind of frustration in getting a topic wrong, reading the solution, understanding it completely — and then getting the next question on that topic wrong too.
It feels like a memory failure. It usually is not.
Understanding a solution is not the same as being able to produce one
When you read a worked solution, each step follows obviously from the last. That feeling of obviousness is real, but it is a property of following an argument, not of constructing one. Constructing requires knowing which step to take when several are available, and reading a solution never trains that, because the choice has already been made for you.
This is why re-reading solutions produces so little improvement compared to the time it takes.
The gap is usually one level down
If you keep failing simultaneous equations, the problem is often not simultaneous equations. It is usually something underneath:
- Failing quadratics → often really failing factorisation
- Failing electricity → often really failing to rearrange formulas
- Failing titration calculations → often really failing mole ratios
- Failing comprehension → often really vocabulary in context
The visible failure is at the top. The actual gap is one or two levels below, and drilling the top level repeatedly does not touch it.
How to find the real gap
When you get a question wrong, do not go straight to the solution. First answer this: at which step did I stop knowing what to do next?
Not "what was the right answer" — where exactly did the path run out. That point is your actual gap. Almost always it is earlier than you expect, and it is something you assumed you already knew.
Then practise the gap, not the topic
If the gap was factorisation, do twenty factorisation questions — not twenty simultaneous equation questions. It feels like going backwards. It is not: fixing the underlying skill repairs every topic sitting on top of it, which is why it usually produces a jump across several areas at once rather than a slow crawl in one.
Track which topics keep returning
The pattern matters more than any single wrong answer. A topic you miss once is noise. A topic you miss across three separate sessions, weeks apart, is a genuine gap asking to be closed.
Keeping a written list of these is enough — you do not need anything fancier. The point is to notice the repetition, because in the moment each failure feels like bad luck rather than a pattern.
