WAEC Biology 2026 · Question 1
An organism that carries out both intracellular and extracellular digestion is
  1. bat
  2. tapeworm
  3. hydra — correct answer
  4. cockroach
Worked solution
Hydra has a sac-like gut called the enteron. Gland cells pour enzymes into the enteron and begin to break the prey down outside the cells (extracellular digestion). Small food particles are then engulfed by the endodermal cells lining the enteron, and digestion is completed inside food vacuoles in those cells (intracellular digestion). Bat and cockroach digest food only outside their cells in a tubular gut, and the tapeworm has no gut at all and simply absorbs food already digested by its host. Only hydra therefore carries out both types of digestion, so the answer is C.
WAEC Biology 2025 · Question 1
Chemical digestion in organisms is the
  1. breakdown of starch into carbohydrates
  2. build up of simple soluble molecules into complex insoluble molecules
  3. breakdown of complex molecules into simple molecules — correct answer
  4. build up of simple insoluble molecules into complex soluble molecules
Worked solution
Chemical digestion is carried out by enzymes, which break large, complex food molecules (such as proteins, fats and carbohydrates) into small, simple, soluble molecules that can be absorbed. Option A is wrong because starch is itself a carbohydrate, and options B and D describe build-up (synthesis) of molecules, which is the opposite of digestion. The answer is C.
WAEC Biology 2024 · Question 1
Which of the following organisms contains chlorophyll in its cells?
  1. Caterpillar
  2. Paramecium
  3. Euglena — correct answer
  4. Grasshopper
Worked solution
Chlorophyll is the green pigment used to make food by photosynthesis. A caterpillar, a Paramecium and a grasshopper are all animal-like organisms that feed on ready-made food and have no chlorophyll. Euglena is a unicellular organism with chloroplasts containing chlorophyll, so it makes its own food in the light. The answer is C.
WAEC Biology 2023 · Question 1
The ability of organisms to maintain a constant internal environment is known as
  1. diuresis
  2. endosmosis
  3. homeostasis — correct answer
  4. plasmolysis
Worked solution
Homeostasis is the maintenance of a constant internal environment (for example body temperature, water and blood sugar level) in spite of changes outside. Diuresis is the production of large amounts of urine, endosmosis is the entry of water into a cell, and plasmolysis is the shrinking of a plant cell's protoplasm in a strong solution. The answer is C.
WAEC Biology 2022 · Question 1
Which of the following statements about living things is correct?
  1. Animals respire using carbon(IV) oxide as a raw material
  2. Growth in plants is limited after some time
  3. Most plants respond to stimulus slowly — correct answer
  4. Higher animals can reproduce asexually
Worked solution
Animals respire using oxygen and give out carbon(IV) oxide, so A is wrong. Plants keep growing throughout life at their meristems, so their growth is not limited, and B is wrong. Higher animals reproduce sexually, so D is wrong. Plants respond to stimuli such as light and gravity by slow growth movements (tropisms), so most plants respond slowly. The answer is C.

How WAEC Biology is set.

West African Examinations Council (WASSCE) sets 60 questions in Biology, answered in 120 minutes — about 120 seconds a question. Practising against that clock is the part most candidates skip, and it is the part that costs marks.

We hold 1,656 published Biology questions spanning 1997 to 2026. You can practise any single year’s paper, or sit a full timed mock that mirrors the real interface — the navigator, the flags and the auto-submit included.

Every question you get wrong comes back the next day, then at longer gaps until it sticks, and your home page leads with your weakest subjects.
